It’s starting look like the PR battle over the oil sands may be starting to shift – if ever so slightly. Those of you who follow me in the the social media sphere know that a lot my focus is honed in on the oil sands and their surrounding issues. A great deal of my free time is spent reading up on the oil sands and hearing what others have to say about the controversial resource.
These days it’s with increasing frequency that American political discourse shifts towards renewable energy and how to develop it. What’s interesting, however, is that the most readily available source of renewable energy is also among the least considered – Canada’s massive hydro power potential.
Suncor Energy’s oil sands tailings ponds are about to get a whole lot smaller. Suncor’s Tailings Reduction Operations (TRO) was approved by Alberta’s Energy Resource Conservation Board (ERCB) earlier this month, meaning the company is now free to implement its precedent-setting tailings technology.

A couple of nights ago, I came across one of the more interesting tweets I’ve seen. Apparently someone had discovered an engineer who was tweeting live from BP’s oil spill cleanup operation.
There’s been a rash of tweets and message board comments proudly proclaiming that the BP oil spill is a “good thing” for the oil sands. In fact, there was even an article written in the Calgary Herald about it. I’m happy to see people get behind their industry and their employers, but doesn’t it all seem just a tad crass?
The debate surrounding climate change, the environment, and our dependence on fossil fuels is galvanizing public opinion like never before. Regardless of your opinion, what is becoming increasingly clear is that the oil sands will begin to face increased emissions-related legislation. Given that such regulation may eventually become reality, I decided to throw together some quick numbers to forecast the financial impact to oil sands producers.
